One of my favorite places to go to find off-season value is the IR. Players get hurt, miss chunks at the end of a season and magically, many of your league mates forget the existed. Or at least forget what they did before hitting the boo boo shelf. Let’s use that to our advantage as we try to build a monster team this off-season. The IR stud I’m looking at this off-season is a receiver that switched teams last year, went to a crowded wide receiver room, and despite his 5’9” frame, shone brightly in his 6 games pre-injury. That would be 6th year Miami wideout, Albert Wilson. I sang Wilson’s praises last off-season after he was signed to a 3-year $24 million deal by the fins and it paid off. Here’s a little of what he accomplished in those six games:
There are plenty of reasons to like Wilson’s skill set. How about the fact that in 2017 he was number 1 in average separation and maintains top 10 over the past 2 seasons? Or that extrapolated his stint through the first 6 weeks put him at a 16-game pace of 61/957/11. That line looks a lot like another surprise fantasy stud at the position from this season, 2018’s WR 17, Tyler Lockett (61/1085/10). There are, however, reasons to be wary Two to be exact. 1. Durability First Wilson has played for 5 seasons and has only played in 16 games once in his career.
According to Sports Injury Predictor, Wilson is a medium risk for injury next season. That puts him at the 69th most likely WR in the league to suffer injury and the 3rd most likely on his team. He looks as though he’ll be healthy enough to participate in 100% of the off-season programs as he’s healed surgery free from his hip issue. 2. Coaching Changes There is the threat looming coaching changes hovering over the entire Dolphin’s offense.. It could be argued that Loggins and Gase’s creative use of him lead to much of Wilson’s production and that would be warranted. But… Wilson’s aforementioned ability to separate both off the line and out of a break make him a quarterback AND a coach’s best friend. Finally, Wilson is one of the few receivers in the league that can thrive all over the field. He’s averaged about 30% of his routes from the slot over the last two years and the 70% split between the outside at both the X and the Z positions as well as from the backfield. Should a new coach come into Miami and overlook that talent and versatility, so be it. Yes, there are risks, but for the price, which should be nearly free at this point in the off-season, I say take them along with the handful of week winning performance I know Wilson will bring to you team. No need to thank me...no, scratch that, I could use the affirmation. Rain it down!
